Skin Care Tips and Tricks – Making the Most of your Skin Care
Updated: Aug 15, 2017
Finding your very best skin is a journey. Along the way, you've probably stumbled upon scores of myths and wives tails that never really lived up to the hype. But what if natural skin care was much simpler?
Chances are you've been through some great skin care products that just didn't seem to work, but just missed an important nuance that could have made all the difference. If you can't say 'yes' to having applied all of the tips and techniques below, your skin care products never had a chance.
Refrigerate Your Eyeliner and Eye Cream
You would never think about leaving a gallon of milk or a yogurt out on the counter overnight, but unfortunately, too many of our skin care and cosmetics never see the inside of a refrigerator. If your fridge contains melons but no mascara, you're missing out.
To create precise lines along your eyes, place your eye pencil in the fridge for at least 20 minutes before using it. This will harden the tip allowing you to sharpen it to precision, providing better results. You will also want to keep your eye creams refrigerated over night, especially if you wake with puffy eyes or dark circles. Applying a cold eye cream to puffy eyes calms swelling and inflammation, thereby reducing puffiness and restoring that vibrance to your eyes.
Don't forget to make sure that your eye creams are ultra-absorptive and highly moisturizing. Check out Y-Not Natural's Jillaroo Organic Avocado Eye Cream for an eye cream that won't disappoint.
Put those expensive creams back down until you Exfoliate!
Too many of us are applying expensive miracle creams and lotions to a layer of dead skin. Unfortunately, dead skin cells form a barrier on the skin preventing your beauty products from penetrating deep into your skin and working their magic. A good natural skin exfoliate work to remove that barrier, as well as assisting your cleansers in removing the oil and dirt from your pores.
Don't Skip the Wrinkle Erasers (Retinoids)
Studies show that high quality retinoids are some of the most powerful anti-wrinkle weapons you can find. They have shown to improve skin's texture, while reducing the appearance of fine lines. Of course, you will want to make sure you're relying on a natural formula. Caustic chemicals, alcohols, and carbons that are found in many retinoids can work to counteract the benefits of your retinol. And when you do find the right natural retinoid, be sure to apply it at night. The sun tends to destroy retinol very quickly, so applying these products at night can make a powerful difference.
The Milk and Honey Bath
Adding a few cups of milk and a couple of tablespoons of honeys to a bath a couple of times a week can demonstrably improve the quality and appearance of your skin. The lactic acid contained in milk is a gentle, natural, and effective exfoliate, while honey is anti-bacterial. The milk and honey bath can help to purify your skin, strip away the top layer of dead cells, and bring out your skin's natural, healthy glow.
Supercharge your Diet!
Diet can be one of the most powerful things you can do to change the quality and appearance of your skin in a meaningful way. Try to implement the following dietary practices as much and as often as you can:
-Skip the refined sugars and flours. Eating refined "white foods" leads to a flood of glucose in the system, which our bodies were never intended to deal with. These foods are highly acidic, interfere with your body's normal hormonal function, and actually work to reduce collagen and elastin levels in the body! Consult with your doctor before switching to any number of quality low-carb diets like Paleo, Whole 30, Primal, or the Maker's Diet.
-Include as many Omega 3,6,and 9 Fatty Acids as you can in your diet. These can come from olive oil, avocados, fish, quality nuts (like almonds), and even a high quality Omega supplement. Combined with the vitamins that usually accompany them, Omegas can give your skin a healthy shine, while reducing the appearance of fine lines.
-Drink water! Studies show that as many as 95% of Americans do not drink enough water! What's worse is that a large chunk of that population is actually dehydrated every day. But water is absolutely vital to healthy skin! Water hydrates skin cells, flushes toxins from the skin, helps keep pores clean, and aids in the maintenance of collagen and elastin. The Institute of Medicine actually recently recommended 91 ounces of water per day for women, and 125 ounces of water per day for men. If you've never actually logged your total water intake each day, chances are, you're not even close.
